Watch How You Sit! Simple Courtesy in Jeepneys

Riding in a jeep along Espana the other day, an American sitting beside me suddenly murmured, “Are Filipinos really this rude when riding a jeep?” He was referring to a woman to his right who was sitting sideways, taking a lot of room, and was practically leaning against him as though she were sitting on a comfy couch.

As much as I hate to agree with him, it is a sad truth that many Filipinos don’t observe simple courtesy when riding in jeeps. In fact, there have been instances when another Filipino when end up blowing his or her stack whenever a callous countryman would sit improperly or do something utterly offensive.

Here are some tips on courteous habits in jeeps…

1) Always sit straight with knees and legs pressed together. Sitting with your legs spread apart takes up a lot of room. This is especially true for men.

2) In the case of women, never sit sideways so that you take up two seats. It’s one thing to act demure, especially if you’re wearing a mini skirt, but show some consideration to your fellow passenger who has to sit with his or her butt hanging from the edge of the seat. Continue reading

Summer Skin Care for Teens

Teenagers are at a phase in their lives when they are particularly conscious about their looks. This is why it is ironic that they are excited about summer and the beach when the heat and the damaging UV rays of the sun are at their peak and could cause damage, and even cancer, to their skin.

If you are a teen and you care about your skin, observe the following summer skin care tips…

1) Use water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher regardless of your skin type. A good sunscreen should not only filter UVB rays, but UVA rays (which cause sunburn) as well since the combination of these rays may lead to the development of skin cancer. Check the labels of the sunscreens you buy. For broad spectrum protection, it should contain benzophenones (oxybenzone), cinnamates (octylmethyl cinnamate and cinoxate), sulisobenzone, salicylates, titanium oxide, zinc oxide, and avobenzone (Parsol 1789).

2) Always apply 1 ounce or an equivalent of 1 shot glass of sunscreen to your face and body 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors. If you are going to swim, play sports or stay outdoors for a longer period of time, reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.

3) Wear sun-protective clothing. I deal garments are made from unbleached cotton, high-luster polyesters and thin, satiny silk that absorb and/or reflect UV rays. Don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your head and face.

4) Keep yourself hydrated by drinking 8-15 glasses of water a day. Continue reading
